Australia: Fremantle Marlins and Victorian Tigers forced into five quarters

Gemma Beadsworth and her team-mates had to play five periods.

It was a script mired in technicalities. Four-time champions Longmont Fremantle Marlins needed an extra quarter to beat Victorian Tigers 13-3 in a National Water Polo League match at Bicton Pool last night. When Catherine Ainsworth returned to the pool after her allotted three major fouls, it was not spotted until the three-quarter-time break.

The referees had no hesitation in replaying the period from just after the restart and nullified all goals and major fouls from that point, including a red card on a Tigers official. Fremantle led 8-2 by this stage and then had the game restart at 5-2 and a man down. The Marlins withstood the extra-man advantage and went on to 6-2 when the siren sounded for the period´s end. The Tigers tired badly in the final quarter and Fremantle rifled in seven goals to one to improve the margin on Thursday´s game against the Tigers — 13-7.

Gemma Beadsworth, who had one goal disallowed in the voided third period, still grabbed four goals while Zoe Arancini netted three of her four goals in the final period. Fremantle coach Wendy Arancini said the game was very heavy although in the end only nine major fouls were given to each team. Tigers coach Travis Bloom rued his team´s lost opportunities on the extra advantage and said his team tired terribly with the additional period.

In the clash of the men´s titans, the champion Fremantle Mariners emerged victorious over Victorian Tigers 10-8. The margin may have been 6-3 at halftime but the Tigers fought back to within one goal three times and looked capable of drawing level after a timeout ploy but Joel Swift took the game for Fremantle with a last-gasp skip shot from outside while under heavy pressure.

In Newcastle, KFC Queensland Breakers men struck a road hump when drawing 9-all with Hunter Hurricanes. The match was levelled six times before the Breakers went to a 9-7 lead with four minutes remaining. Hunter responded through Daniel Robinson and then United States college import Mat MacDonell to level the game with two minutes remaining. The Breakers had two chances on extra-man plays and Hunter one in the final minutes to no avail.

Here the Breakers women won 10-7 with Beijing Olympics all-star Bronwen Knox converting five goals in the first three periods by which time the Breakers were 9-6 ahead. In Sydney, UNSW Wests Magpies fended off Fyfe Adelaide Jets 10-4 and the UNSW Killer Whales turned a 7-5 three-quarter margin into an 11-7 victory over the Jets.
