Olympic Games draw

After the conclusion of the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Trieste (ITA) from April 3-10, 2016 the draws for the men’s and women’s events at the Rio Games were held. The men's competition saw two tough groups being composed with especially group B looking to include a fierce and close battle for the top 4 positions. Only these spots will grant access to the quarterfinals. In the women's tournament, with just a total of 8 squads competing, it will all be about getting into the right place in terms of matching up in the quarterfinals as all teams advance.
The men's tournament will start on August 6 while the women come into play on August 9. The preliminary stage of the tournament will take place in the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center while the play-off phase continues in the big Olympic Aquatics Stadium, just opened this week officially by the major of Rio and Brazil's president.



In the men’s competition, 12 teams will compete in Brazil from August 6-20, 2016 and will be distributed in two groups, as follows:

MEN

GROUP A
A1 – Serbia
A2 – Greece
A3 – Brazil
A4 – Australia
A5 – Japan
A6 – Hungary

GROUP B
B1 – United States
B2 – Spain
B3 – France
B4 – Montenegro
B5 – Italy
B6 – Croatia

In the women’s field, 8 national squads will be present in Rio from August 9, 19, 2016 and are included in two groups, as follows:

B3 – Hungary
B4 – United States

MEN ORDER OF PLAY

There will be two (2) groups of six (6) teams, which form groups A and B. Each group will play a round robin. The four (4) highest ranked teams in each group will qualify for the Quarter Final Round. The fifth and sixth ranked teams in each group will be eliminated and will not play anymore.

Games played in the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Quarter Final, Semi Final or Final Round. All games played in group D must be played so that a definite winner is declared. Accordingly it may be necessary to apply the Water Polo Rules relating to penalty shoot-out.

Please note that the Management Committee of FINA Competitions may change the order and schedule of games to meet with the requirements of the Host Federation and/or television provided that at least twenty four (24) hours’ notice is given.
