Netherlands stun Spain, Canada edge Russia

The men's Olympic qualification tournament got underway in Trieste, Italy on Sunday with already on opening day some striking results. In the tournament opener it was Canada who held off Russia in a close battle 6-7 after scoring 3 goals, including 2 by Justin Boyd, in the final quarter to complete a nice turnaround. Hungary made no mistake against France starting off their tournament with a 7-13 win. Romania got the nice start by beating Slovakia 11-13 before the major surprise of the first day took place.

Here Spain, who had beaten the Netherlands 15-4 during group play at the 2016 European Championships in Belgrade last January, were upset 5-7 in a stunner. The Dutch side even held Spain scoreless for 2 quarters and secured the stunner in the second half after leading 3-4 at half-time. Robin Lindhout and captain Roeland Spijker led the scoring for the Dutch side with 2 apiece while Alberto Munarriz netted a pair for Spain. No surprises in the remaining 2 matches on Sunday. Germany raced past South Africa 4-23 and hosts Italy dominated Kazakhstan 14-3 to start their quest for an Olympic berth with a win.
