Szolnok complete perfect run

With round 14 we conclude the first part of the Hungarian domestic competition.
In this final round Eger and Szolnok went head to head with honor and morale at stake. A victory for Szolnok earlier in the season, and a superior goal difference, already secured the defending champions the top spot in the group. However, with the first games of the winner’s group already this week, the winner of this weekend’s clash could be considered the morale winner. The home side, without Balázs Erdélyi and Uros Cuckovic, had a difficult start but fought back after the break. They briefly took the lead at 4-3 but Szolnok restored their confidence again quickly to take a 2 goal lead soon after. Eger lacked the resilience to bounce back after this and so Szolnok completed a 100% score with 14 victories from 14 games. This also means they go into the winner’s group with a 6-point lead on the rest of the pack. In their current form, it is difficult to see anyone steal any points away from the big favourite.
Because of Szolnok’s supremacy, the battle for 2nd place and qualification for the championship super final will be even fiercer.

Behind Szolnok and Eger, Szeged and BVSC both concluded their regular season with a victory and also qualify for the winner’s group.

In group B the winner was going to come from the final game as well. OSC went to visit FTC and was determined to finish the group strong. Last year’s runner up was more or less expected to complete a perfect run as well, but ran into problems and dropped some points along the way. In this round 14 game though, OSC was not having any of that. They came out strong and took a 5-1 lead at half-time. After the break they further extended this lead to a maximum of 6 goals at 8-2. Only then they allowed FTC some breathing room and the hosts were able to bring the deficit down to 5. The performance for OSC will increase morale and belief in a good result later in the season. Most likely they will have to take on Eger for that 2nd place spot. Once again it was Bence Bátori and Ádám Decker stealing the show. Top scorer Bátori added his 35th, 36th, and 37th goal of the season and Decker hit 2 more to his total as well.

Honvéd picked up a comfortable victory at KSI with Gergely Kiss scoring 5 goals. The Olympic hero might not be the goal machine anymore that he once was, but at 35 years old he is still a fundamental part of the team in and out of the pool. It will be Kiss’ quality and experience that can help the younger players at Honvéd develop and flourish.

The final qualification spot in group B was still up for grabs as well. Debrecen and Vasas both hoped to join the country’s elite and this motivated both teams to finish this round victorious. Unfortunately for Debrecen, they required Vasas to slip up.

The final results mean that we now have 2 groups with which we continue the road to the super final.
In the winner’s group there is Szolnok, Eger, OSC, FTC, Honvéd, Szeged, BVSC, and Vasas.
In the other group we have Debrecen, Miskolc, PVSK, Szentes, Kaposvár, UVSE, Tatabánya, and KSI.

There is little time to catch a breath because the follow up games will commence already this week.
All teams will play each other once where a draw decided what team plays at home. The final number 1 and 2 will eventually play a super final to be crowned the 2016 champion.
