USA win Intercontinental Tournament, Brazil qualify for Super Final

The reinging champions won the Intercontinental Tournament again. USA defeated Australia 6-5 in a close final to defend their gold medal at the World League Interncontinental Tournament now going up for regaining their World League throne at the Super Final in Shanghai early June. After beating the Aussie Stingers 5-8 on Saturday the host team got off to another strong start in the tournament final on Sunday in Lewisville, Texas. Their 3-0 lead at quarter time forced Australia to fight back already in the 2nd term which they did as the score was brought back to 4-3 in favour of the hosts at half-time. A close 2nd half followed with just a few goals as Stingers goalie Kelsey Wakefield (10 saves) and her USA counterpart Ashleigh Johnson (8) lifting their perfromance. Ashleight Southern tried hard for Australia scoring 2 goals but as Maddie Musselman had pushed USA to 5-3 and 6-4 in the 2nd half, Southern's goals only cut the deficit with the desired equaliser not falling. Despite several exclusions in the final minutes the teams dit not score and USA held on for the tournament win concluding a convincing week in unbeaten fashion for the gold medal.

China grabbed 3rd place beating Canada 10-6 which meant the 5th place battle between Brazil and Japan was to decide the final Super Final participant. In a tense and close game Melani Dias crowned her and her team as winners as she scored the winning goal with 49 seconds remaining for Brazil as they edged Japan 9-8 and join the favourites onto the Super Final in Shanghai.
