Calm before the storm as regular season climax approaches

After round 12 a week ago, it was just 2 games left in the regular season. Szolnok and Eger rule supreme in Group A and whole of the Hungarian water polo community is waiting for their round 14 clash on Sunday. Szolnok has the superior goal difference, so even a victory for Eger would probably still keep the defending champion on top of the group. But the result of the match will be a key indicator for what to expect for the rest of the competition.
Before all of this, the two giants first had to collect the points against Szentes and Miskolc though. The matches turned out to be not much more than a formality. Eger thumped Szentes 18-6 with Márton Szivós (pictured) showing he is not quite ready yet to give up on the Olympic dream. 'Marci' contributed an incredible 6 goals at a 100% conversion rate. Rivals Szolnok welcomed Miskolc at the Szolnoki Arena and put on an impressive performance. The visitors had little chance against an on fire Dénes Varga and his team mates. Varga, like Szivós, finished the game with 6 goals and the teams look ready for the face off this Sunday in Eger.

In group B Honvéd already concluded their round 14 match earlier in the week against KSI and another victory yesterday in Debrecen means they secure 3rd place and comfortably qualify for the winner’s group. Because Vasas beat PVSK, the 2012 champions overtake Debrecen for 4th place and are in a good position to qualify for the winner’s group as well. Just as in group A, the winner of group B will come from the direct confrontation between OSC and FTC in the last match of the regular season. FTC, led once again by Marko Cuk with 5 goals, faced little resistance from UVSE to keep the pressure on OSC. The 2015 runner up seemed unimpressed as they scored 20 goals in their round 13 match against KSI. The rejuvenated Ádám Decker reinforced his position again as all round super man with 5 goals to bring his season total to 21. More than renowned shooters like team mate Ferenc Salamon, Eger’s Norbert Hosnyánszky, or Szolnok’s veteran Norbert Madaras.
The stage is set and the teams are ready. It is time for super Sunday!
