The Spanish champs defeated Hungarians Szentesi VK 15-10 at home to take a big step towards Final Four participance in their attempt to regain the throne. Fueling the victory was centre forward Maica Garca who proved an unstoppable force scoring 6 goals for Sabadell. Elsewhere defending champions Olympiacos also posted a win but had their trouble overcoming Uralochka Zlatoust. Led by the Italian duo of Giulia Emmolo and Roberta Bianconi combined for 8 goals sparking the Greek powerhouse to a 13-10 victory. Centre forward Alexandra Asimaki added 3 more for the winners. Good news for the winners came out the following as the LEN decided to approve a request made by both teams to play leg 2 also in Piraeus so that Olympiacos will avoid a long travel and get the support from their fans also in the return match next week. The closest match of the day was also played in Greece as Vouliagmeni fell to Kinef Kirishi 9-10 thanks to a late turnaround by the visitors. They trailed 9-6 after 3 quarters but went on for 4 unanswered goals in the final period clinching a hard-fought but important win with a home game coming up in leg 2. Mataro and UVSE will play their quarterfinals opener on Thursday.
