Pro Recco hand Bresia first loss

For the best teams in Italy, filled with players just coming off 2 busy months of preparing and playing the European Championships, the start of the 2nd half of the national league was all but comfortable. The unbeaten squads of Brescia and Pro Recco met in Brescia already on Friday kicking off the 13th round. A real clash, with a close first half, was decided in the final 2 periods with Recco coming out as winners 6-8. Consecutive hits by Dusan Mandic and Massimo Giacoppo in the 3rd quarter, and only Andrea Fondelli as goal scorer in the entire final session, meant the difference in the top match-up. Mandic and Sandro Sukno (pictured) earned top scoring honours netting 2 shots while Valerio Rizzo produced the same offence for the home team who suffered their first defeat of the season now in 2nd place on the table, tied with Recco who still need to play their postponed match vs. Roma Vis Nova (to be played in March).

On Saturday the rest of the matches were played with ties noted at Ortigia and Roma while Savona held off a late comeback by Posillipo for the 11-10 win. First up Ortigia who held CC Napoli to an 11-11 draw at home thanks to left-hander Damjan Danilovic who scored 3 goals overcoming a 5-goal performance by Darko Brguljan for the visitors. Roma Vis Nova stormed back in the final quarter to tie Bogliasco 8-8. But with 3 goals in the final period the home team even looked close to the win before Bogliasco's Matthew De Trane scored his 3rd of the game to level the teams and securing a point.
Winners by close margin were Savona who saw visitors Posillipo scoring 4 unanswered goals in the 4th quarter coming real close to completing a nice comeback but it was all they got as Savona held off the late comeback and survived celebrating an 11-10 win, led by Kristijan Milakovic' 4 goals.
An easy afternoon what was Sport Management experienced at the start of the 2nd half of the season. Facing lower ranked Florentia the visitors erupted for a 23-goal scoring festival that finished with a 10-23 final score. Antonio Petkovic used the big victory to add 5 more goals to his league-leading total of now 37. Acquachiara followed the example kicking this off with a win. RN Sori, last ranked, were unable to force an upset in Naples suffering a 12-6 defeat. Stefano Luongo and Matteo Gitto led all scorers with 3 in the win for the home team. Pallanuoto Trieste kept sight of 8th place on the tabel beating Lazio at home 12-5 in a solid performance.
