No surprises going into final 4 weeks of regular season

After 2 months without competition for some, and 2 months of intense International water polo for others, the Hungarian league went into the last 4 weeks of the regular season. Only 5 more games remain before the competition split and there are still a lot of points left to fight for. In group A Szolnok and Eger still rule supreme and we do not expect any change here in the next couple of games until the two favorites meet on the final round 14.

Szolnok traveled to Kaposvár where Zoltán Szécsi defended the host’s goal. Szécsi has been more involved in the background but is still actively part of the squad and did an acceptable job against the super stars of Szolnok. At the other end it was Attila Decker in goal, instead of Belgrade’s best goal keeper Viktor Nagy, Decker was given a chance to show he is still a quality goalkeeper and with 71% saved shots he did confirm this. As expected, Szolnok collected the points without any difficulties and will be looking ahead to the Champions League clash with Pro Recco on Wednesday. The Hungarian champions will be looking for a positive result to strengthen their position in the top 3 of their group.

Rivals Eger faced a more difficult opponent to prepare for their Champions League match this week. Szeged has been knocking on the door a few times this season already and was hoping to catch the visitors off guard in an entertaining first half. With 4 goals each in the first period the teams kept equal tread. After the first short break Eger took the control and went into half-time leading 5-7. 2 goals in quick succession then doubled the lead in the third period and secured the points. In form center forward Balázs Hárai (pictured) was the man of the match with another 4 goals. The 28-year old has been pivotal to Eger’s success this season and an important asset to national team coach Tibor Benedek as well.  Wednesday Eger welcomes German Spandau and hope to fight their way back into the top 3 of group A in the Champions League.

The match of the weekend Honvéd versus FTC left the audience a little disappointed in the end. To get back into competition after such a long break is always difficult and both teams looked rusty. On defense either team put down a quality performance, but offensively they were lacking venom and accuracy. For Honvéd only Gergő Kovács got his name on the score sheet with 2 goals, and the visitors only managed to hit 5 times. For FTC this eventually proved to be enough for the victory but both teams will be scratching their heads about the number of missed chances and shots. A special mentioning though for both goal keepers Dávid György (Honvéd) and Soma Vogel (FTC) who each had an outstanding day with 69% and 85% shots saved respectively.

The loss for Honvéd means OSC and FTC are now equal again in points with their neighbouring rival with all 3 teams on 24 points. Behind them Debrecen and Vasas still battle for 4th place.

Like Szolnok and Eger, OSC is also awaiting a tough task on Wednesday to try and collect the first Champions League points. Opponent Galatasaray sits at the bottom of the group together with the Hungarians and both teams will desperately want to get off that awful zero.
