Honvéd pushes to the top against frustrated OSC

In the final round of the year, ahead of the Hungarian Cup Finals and winter break, Honvéd have taken a stand at the top of Group B. While OSC was projected as the top favourite to win the group and possibly even do this with a 100% score, it is their Budapest neighbour who is standing tall after 9 rounds. On goal difference, OSC are even only on 3rd place in the group also trailing FTC.

OSC have been suffering from a form crisis for several weeks now and struggling both in Europe and domestic competition. The lack of a world-class centre-forward is severely impacting the tactical flexibility and attacking power of the team. Youngster Toni Német certainly is talented, but lacks the experience needed for a top centre-forward at Champions League level, and with Nemét out injured, OSC are struggling even on the national stage. Coach Balazs Vince did anticipate by bringing Brazilian attacker Antonio Inserra Neto into the squad on a free transfer, but it could be too late already.

Because of the loss against Honvéd yesterday, OSC have now collected 21 points. Championship rivals Szolnok and Eger have collected 27 and 24 points respectively in as many games. Even Honvéd are now ahead of OSC with 24 points and leading Group B. With still some games to come after the winter break, OSC cannot afford any further mistake if they want to keep their Championship dream alive. It will already be difficult enough to even reach the final at this stage.

From the start of the match against Honvéd, OSC looked nervous and was unable to catch their rhythm. The visitors came out quick and aggressively and deservedly took a 3 goal lead at half-time.
The usually so reliable shooters of OSC could not get the shots they wanted and 20-year old Honvéd goalie Dávid György made it look easy. As Honvéd started to realise a victory was up for grabs, they pushed even harder and the match got a little unfriendly at times. The referee called captains Miklos Gor Nagy and Gergely Kiss together to tell their teams to calm down.
The image of the game hardly changed though. Honvéd kept their composure, defended well, and kept scoring goals to keep OSC at bay. Finally the match finished at 7-10 which was loudly celebrated by the traveling Honvéd fans and their players.

The victory is a huge boost of confidence for Honvéd to finish the year in style. With 5 more games to play in 2016 ahead of the competition split, they are proving to be a very dangerous outsider. Honvéd might not win the Championship, but they might very well cause one of the top contenders to lose their shot at glory.
For OSC this loss is another bitter pill to swallow after suffering defeat already against Debrecen, and heavy defeats against Jug and Pro Recco in the Champions League. It might not be too late to turn it around, but OSC need to sort out their problems quickly if they do not want their ambitions to slip away. Especially because rivals Szolnok and Eger keep winning games and only seem to be a threat to each other. Szolnok pushed number 3 of Group A, Szeged, aside with ease at 18-9 and Eger pickup another win against Tatabánya.

With all the focus on the top of the competition, Miskolc deserves a special notice as well. The recently promoted side is comfortably in 5th place of Group A. The newcomers are ahead of seasoned OB1 teams Szentes and Kaposvár, and miles ahead of fellow ex-OB1/B team Tatabánya.
