Winning start for Manchester, Cheltenham

City of Manchester and champions Cheltenham were the only sides to win both their matches during the opening round of British League men’s Super 5s at Surrey Sports Park pool. Both had to work hard for success against fast-improving Invicta. Cheltenham, boosted by two penalty saves from goalkeeper Sam Legge, won 9-7; Manchester led 5-2 after two periods but were restricted to a 7-4 victory in the end.

Key phase of Cheltenham’s second win – 12-10 against Lancaster – was the third period, when goals by Mike Thomas, Mark Banwell and Adam Legge took the score from 7-7 to 10-7. Manchester were comfortable 9-2 winners against Bristol Central, with two goals apiece for Aaron Winstanley, Joe O’Regan, Rob Simpson and Rob Rae.
Bristol took a 4-3 lead against Lancaster after two periods but then collapsed to a 14-9 defeat after losing three players in rapid succession for misconduct. Tom Curwen (5), Glen Robinson (3) and Scott Sharpe (3) were the leading Lancaster marksmen. For latest scores and all the news from the UK, go to
