Close wins in group B keep Honvéd, OSC on top

After the Cup action during the weekend the teams were back to business again as we rapidly approach the winter break. Just one round remaining before the focus goes to Belgrade for the European Championships and the last chance for Hungary to directly qualify for the Rio Olympics in the summer. We will only return to domestic competition again by the weekend of January 30 for round 10 of the league. However, before all that, there are still some games to be played and we have seen before that one small distraction can cost valuable points.
Honvéd and OSC were both reminded to that again during their round 8 match ups against UVSE and PVSK respectively.

Both teams are leading group B with equal points and probably have their eyes set already on the one on one encounter scheduled for Dec.8 to finish the year with a bang and top the group solo.
However, UVSE and PVSK were not going to let the leaders off easy.
In Budapest at the Nyéki Imre pool, OSC took the lead early on and looked to be heading towards a comfortable victory while leading 5-1 at half time. The visitors hold their ground though and stopped OSC from going on a goal spree. Instead, in the final quarter, PVSK kept the hosts from scoring any goal at all and recorded two hits themselves. This finally led to a 7-5 victory for OSC and although, eventually, the victory was never in any real danger, the fact that a lower ranked team like PVSK was able to keep OSC from scoring will be a worrying thought while preparing for the battle with Honvéd in 2 weeks.

Rival Honvéd had quite a scare themselves as well. Going into the final quarter of the game, hosts UVSE were leading 5-4 and looking to secure their 3rd win of the season. Honvéd realized just in time what was at stake though and produced 3 consecutive goals to go into the lead at a 5-7 score. Carelessness in the Honvéd defense then allowed UVSE to come back level again with less than a minute left on the clock. Luckily for the visitors they were able to keep their calm and with just 17 seconds to go, Zsolt Simon launched the winning goal behind the UVSE goalie.

With the points in the bag, the group B leaders can now focus on the task ahead. With Eger and Szolnok ruling supreme in the other group, the points are more valuable than ever before. For OSC the challenge comes with an even heavier load as they welcome European power house and Italian champion Pro Recco for game 3 of the Champions League this weekend. Exciting times for OSC fans!

In group A Szolnok and Eger had a more comfortable Wednesday evening in preparation of their upcoming Champions League clash against JUG and Barcenolenetta respectively.
Although Szolnok were a little stunned by the start of opponents Tatabánya. The newly promoted hosts went on a scoring spree in the first period of the game and led the defending champions 5-4 in the first mini break. Szolnok then took back the control to lead 5-8 by half time and build on that advantage in the second part of the match. Especially Aaron Younger looked sharp shooting 4 from 6. The Australian has made a big impact on the already impressive Szolnok line up and is now 5th in the league’s top goal scoring list.

Rivals Eger had no problems at all visiting neighbors Miskolc in their round 8 match up. Leading 3-10 at half time the hosts had the job done early and eased out the rest of the game. This allowed the hosts to grab a couple goals in the 3rd period, but then Eger closed their defense again for the final part of the game to win 7-17. Coach Norbert Dabrowski will be happy to see contribution from almost all of his team as Eger players got their name on the scoring board that night. Surprisingly, the only player not to find the net was center forward Balázs Hárai who has been in great form so far this season.
