Real Canoe upsets Terrassa

In this year's Spanish men's league just the best four teams will get to participate in the play-offs for the national championship. For Real Canoe the win over one of these current best four sides last Saturday in the league's 18th round was welcome, both for the confidence and much needed points in order to make a comeback for fourth place currently occupied by Mediterrani. Real Canoe held off Terrassa (pictured) at home 9-8 to now trail the league's fourth place by seven points with still four rounds of play ahead. The big match-up of the weekend featuring current leaders Barceloneta visiting second seed Mataro Quadis just confirmed the superiority of the reigning national champs who took a quick 0-2 lead to win 7-11, led by Albert Español who scored five goals. In other games Navarra held possible 8th place contender Barcelona to an 8-all draw by winning the game's second half 4-1. The two bottom ranked sides of the league both suffered clear losses. AR Concepcion could not endanger Mediterrani after the first quarter and saw the home side running away to a 14-5 victory while Sant Andreu proved too much for Helios. The visitors also ran away from quarter-time on and stopped with a final score of 4-14 on the boards. Joel Esteller's four goals for the winners means he joins Albert Español as the league's current top scorer.
