Tough win sends Vouliagmeni into quarter-finals - Euro League day 4 results

Reigning European champs Sabadell were the first to secure a spot in the quarter-finals on day 4 of the Euro League qualification round. The Spanish women confirmed their favorite status to stay unbeaten throughout the weekend in Imperia, Italy as they concluded their games in group A with a 21-7 win over UVSE Budapest. The Hungarians finished in fifth place without any points. Olga Domenech scored a game-high four goals, followed by Melissa Seidemann, Jennifer Pareja, Anni Espar and Judith Forca who all netted a triple. Apart from group B, where both Russian sides claimed the top two spots, several other quarter-final berths are still up for grabs. So it was in group C where Vouliagmeni faced ZVL in a head-to-head battle for the next round. The Greek gained a tough 7-9 win, led by centre forward Alexandra Asimaki's three goals, and therewith secured the second spot in the group and one with the final eight. Meanwhile in group D Russian LEN Trophy finalist SKIF Izmailovo surprised on the final day of competition in Eger by topping then group leaders Firenze 9-5 for their first win of the weekend. For the Italians though claiming the group's top spot was already a done deal after winning the first two matches. They will be joined in the quarters by Olympiacos who let no doubt on who would get hold of the second place in the group playing home side Eger in a head-to-head duel for progressing. The Greek side, led by Aussie Stinger Bronwen Knox who scored three goals, beat Eger 12-6. The extra man situations proved to be a big difference. Olympiacos converted on 4 of the 5 possessions while Eger just scored once out of 9 opportunities. In group C Orizzonte Catania completed their unbeaten run holding off Szentes 18-10 on Sunday. Captain Tania di Mario led the way on offence scoring six goals. Imperia secured their spot in the quarters by beating Lille 12-7 in the final game on Sunday at home in group A. In the final game of the weekend the all-Britian match-up was won by the home side who triumphed 12-7 to close out their weekend on a positive note with the first and only win.
