US ladies take Olympic crown - Australia claims bronze

In women's waterpolo the medal winners of the 2012 Olympic Games here in London, Great Britain will be created tonight. Team USA completed their collection of titles by the first Olympic gold medal, when head coach Adam Krikorian's players gained quite a clear 8-5 victory against Olympic newcomer Spain in the final game. The bronze medal clash ended up in a win for the Aussie Stingers, just as four years ago, who defeated Hungary 13-11 after extra time. In the ranking matches China beat Russia 16-15 to finished fifth, just like in 2008. Italy conluded the 2012 Olympics as seventh, beating home team Great Britain in the ranking match by four unsanwered goals in the second period, 11-7.

US Top scorer Maggie Steffens netted five goals to take the scorers crown with 21 goals in six matches. US veterans Brenda Villa and Heather Petri gained their first gold medal in their fourth Olympic appearance. Both players scored once in the final game.

In the bronze medal game, both teams went into overtime after Hungary's Dora Antal scored an incredible buzzer beating goal to tie the game at 11 stealing the ball from Australia's goalie Alicia McCormack in the dying seconds of regular time. Australia's Gemma Beadsworth came up big in overtime though scoring two goals to clinch the victory and repeating their achievement from the 2008 Beijing Games.
