Khanty-Mansiysk takes away victory

In the final clash for a new winner in the Women’s LEN Trophy the Russian representative Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk gained a big advantage in the first-leg appearance next to the Mediterranean Sea. After a long journey, the team from Siberia already took a precious victory by one goal in their away match of the final series, beating the Italian representative and final games newcomer RN Mediterranea Imperia 13-12. The return match will already be held on Wednesday, 2 May, in the home pool of the Russian club.

Imperia’s veteran player Mercedes Stieber, 1994 FINA World champion with the Hungarian national team, scored five goals in a match full of action and a record number of 25 goals. The team from Northern Italy was already leading by three goals, 6-3, but Olga Timofeeva finally scored the winning goals for the guests with 40 seconds to go on the game clock.
