Venezuela withdraws from Olympic Qualifiers

The organisers of the FINA Men’s Olympic Games Qualification Tournament starting in Edmonton, Calgary so Sunday confirmed today that Venezuela has withdrawn from the event. Due to the lack of time this gap in the field of participants will not be filled any more. The organisers have already revised the schedule of the 11-Nation-Tournament which is starting on Sunday at 12:30 pm local time.

“There’s no question that it’s an unfortunate development and we’re very disappointed that Venezuela is unable to participate,” said Ahmed El-Awadi, Executive Director of Water Polo Canada. It is an unlucky start for the event to be hosted by the North Americans for the second time after the 1992 competition in Calgary.

The withdrawing might cause gaps in the revised schedule, but is not expected to change the value of the competition. The players from South America were on the underdogs of the event. The four of each Preliminary Round group will advance to the quarter-finals to be held on Good Friday. Here the four Olympic Games participant will be created in head-to-head duels as already announced before.
