Important win for Partizan - Champions League day 5 results

The Champions League day 5 started in Piraeus, Greece where Olympiakos grabbed their last chance of surviving with a big 11-2 win over Montenegrin representative Budva. With the win, the Greeks still have a chance of qualifying for the quarter finals although Budva holds a three-point advantage in group A. The Montenegrins will have to win their game day 6 match in order to advance. If they lose and Olympiacos manages to win, the Greeks will finish in second place and qualify. Jadran Herceg Novi made a huge step to the quarter finals in group D beating Russian national champions Spartak Volgograd 13-10 at home. In group C reigning champs Partizan Belgrade gained a much needed 9-5 victory over Vasas in order to keep their quarter finals hopes alive. Milos Cuk scored three for the Serbs. After Szeged's 9-10 win at Eger, Partizan will face Szeged in the last game of the prelims in a battle for the first place while Vasas take on Eger. The big game in group B between Croatian powerhouses Mladost and Jug ended up in a close 6-7 win for Jug who therewith secured the group's first place. Lefthander Maro Jokovic scored three goals for the Croatian national champs. Day 5 top scorers was newly European champion and Pro Recco's centre-forward Dusko Pijetlovic who scored no less than seven goals in the 15-7 win for Recco over Marseille in group D. 19.00 Partizan Raiffeisen Belgrade (SRB) vs Teva‐Vasas Uniqa (HUN) 9-5 (2-0, 2-1, 1-1, 4-3)

Srdjan Tomic - Reigning European champions Partizan Belgrade managed to gain a much needed victory (9-5) over Hungarian vice-champions Vasas in the fifth round of the Group C preliminary round of the Champions League. With strong defence and an inspiring performance by Serbian goalkeeper Slobodan Soro and well executed attacks trough Milos Cuk and Milan Aleksic, Partizan continued to battle for a spot with the final eight teams. At the beginning of the match Soro was undisputed, even from the close range, and Stefan Mitrovic, Milan Aleksic and Milos Cuk were on top of their respective games to give Partizan a 4-1 lead at half time. In the second half, captain Vladimir Vujasinovic lead the defence and Partizan centre-forward Milos Korolija dominated the offensive end for the impressive win. Vasas managed to regain selfconfidence in the final period but was outscored eventually. Gergely Katonas had a lot of opportunities to score and managed to put two goals in the net while Gergely Kiss, veteran Barnabas Steinmetz and Marton Vamos scored once each.
